Applications for early admission were down 20% this year. With stories like that below, will you avoid Duke this year or next?

Apparently, some of you thought that I was spreading rumors. This story shows that applications were down 20%. With nutjobs like that quoted professor in the other story on their staff, why would anyone want to go to Duke when other choices are available? http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070104/4duke.htm

No, I wouldn't.
I'm applying to transfer from my college in New England and decided not to apply to Duke, even though it's probably the "best school" right near my hometown in NC. I also think I'd be a competitive applicant (4.0 unweighted HS GPA, 3.8 college GPA, 32 ACT, etc.) and will be applying to some other "big-name" schools like Stanford and UPenn.
For clarification: I don't think the Duke players committed rape or sexual assault. I believe they're guilty of soliciting (and engaging) a prostitute (which is what she was, regardless of the "exotic dancer" title) and underage drinking. The woman is guilty of false report and engaging in prostitution. The DA is kind of nutty and the charges should (and most likely will) be dropped but I also don't feel sorry for what those players got themselves into. What good is going to come from hiring prostitutes and getting drunk?
I realize plenty of college kids get drunk and some get into prostitution (on both ends of it) but I don't feel sorry for them when they get to face the consequences of their actions.
While the lacrosse case influenced my decision to apply, a bigger factor was that I've personally known about 5 Duke graduates in my life and I've never liked a single one of them. They are also not particularly strong in my major and they're ultra-expensive (I wouldn't get enough financial aid to matter). Durham, NC is also not really an ideal city with high crime rates and lots of gang warfare.

If you looked at more recent news stories you would have found out that the accusations were false and the District Attorney dropped the case because the woman who accused them turned out to be a pathological liar. The families of these students are going to appear on "60 Minutes" very soon to talk about the havoc that this lying woman caused for their sons and their whole families.
Good luck getting into Duke. They turn down about four out of five very well qualified students who apply. Duke is one of the premier schools in the world - it is too bad this false rumor you are spreading had to unfairly blemish their programs.

If I had any chance of getting in I would absolutely go there. One of the best colleges in the country, powerhouse basketball with the best fans in sports, and North Carolina is nice, although Durham isn't the best place to be. Unfortunately I don't have the grades or sat scores to get in so it doesn't even matter.

Of course, those guys are hot! Everything about Duke is pleasing to the eye. (Besides the fact it is a top school)

I'm not college-bound (I'm in college) but yes, I would have gone to Duke. I'd love to go there for medical school...

I have to agree with Matt. Besides, if you look hard enough and dig deep enough, you can find dirt on ANY college or university.

Why would you avoid it? It's still a world class university.
