Freedom of choice and karma are not mutually exclusive principles. Karma is the result of our actions. There is something inevitable about it, as once consequences begin, it can be difficult to control the pace of events, or their direction.
You don't have to believe in multiple lifetimes to believe in karma. Karma can and does operate in the here and now as well.
As for the river of life - I think of life as a vast ocean, an ocean that we cannot leave. When we die, the body we had sinks to the bottom of the ocean, but our consciousness floats out into the primal waters, where another body is found eventually. I can remember pieces of several lifetimes, and there are simple techniques to experience your own.

If you're asking if you get another 'go around' in life, no. 'It is appointed for a man once to die, and then the judgement'. Humans always have freedom of choice in life, but will answer for their choices; sometimes here on earth, but definitely at the judgement seat of God.
