Actually, standardized spelling is relatively recent.

To answer your question: Educational theories and practices are in eternal flux. As to spelling, it never has been an easy thing to teach or learn. It comes more naturally to some than to others. Others seem to be the majority. One has to work at it and many people don't see the point.
Most of my errors are a matter of my fingers working faster than my brain and neglecting to proof-read. Some of them are because I learned to spell in a more "traditional" mode. ; )
I have no idea why spell check is ignored. Perhaps people don't know it is there?

Not this question again!!

I think (hope) the majority of people who are lax with spelling and punctuation on here are just slapdash and because they regard yahoo answers as a leisure activity, they don't worry like they would if they were at work or school. Also, there are many people on here for whom English is not their first language. Before you complain, maybe you should ask yourself how good your Russian is??!!

On the whole, I agree with you. People's skill in English has gone downhill over the years, but don't assume that how people write on yahoo answers is a reflection of how they write in real life.

And with a "check spelling" icon on top of the answer box, you'd think they'd use it! I have a college degree, and sometimes I misspell words, only because my brain goes faster than my fingers, but if I think something is wrong, I check it before I sent it out.

I do think that there are very intelligent people on here answering questions, but most people are very lazy with their spelling and grammar, and they just don't care, which reflects badly on them.

i've got faith that's a misplaced paintings and the school equipment is particularly to blame. i could not have faith it while my little ones started doing essays and projects for college and submitted paintings with spelling and grammar blunders and nonetheless have been given rather sturdy marks. apparently, as long as they "get the message throughout the time of" the spelling and grammar does not remember!! in my opinion, i attempt to confirm that despite homework and projects that my little ones do at abode have been checked earlier they bypass returned to college and that i clarify any blunders. Our youthful son has genuine problem with analyzing and spelling so we drill him with flashcards of his weekly "sight" words. that's slow going, even even though it form of feels to be working.

Sometimes people do not spell well.
Sometimes it is difficult for them to type and they just post a message rather than correct the message. And maybe they do not notice.

No it is not lost. Just too few people today are looking for that art.
