also, it it actually possible to have a GPA of above 4.0? because ive heard people saying they do.

4.0 is hard but people do get it...just not many. As far as getting into an Ivy league school, you have to look at the requirements, the GPA is only part of the requirements...Test scores, essays, recommendations are all also part of the equation. But a 3.73 is a good GPA.

I had a 3.7 and I got into 3 ivy league schools including harvard. However, I knew, for instance, that a 3.7 was pretty good. I knew a 4.0 was perfect (all As) and I also knew that it was possible to have over a 4.0 (as other posters have noted). I also went to a very hard high school. So, not to be harsh, but if you don't know these things then I wonder what kind of education you got in hs, and whether an ivy league school is really the place where you'd learn best. Also there are a ton of GREAT colleges that aren't ivy league!

It is a very good GPA. IVY league schools are co competitive they usually can pick from just students with 4.0 or 3.9's. HOWEVER, do NOT let this keep you fom applying. IVY league schools are also up with the times and know that your leadership experience, vollunteer and community work, involvment in spots and activities are also vey important. They "weigh" them in witth the GPA. So if you were in charge of three school clubs and lead soccer player, and vullunteered 10 hours per week at the soup kitchen, plus won dance competitions, your 3.7 would probably not be as important as a student who got a 4.0 but wasn't involved in anything other then their ownstudying to get there. Your essay is going to have to really WOW them as well, consider yourself an underdog and you need to stand out. Dont write anything stupid, like a poem, but make sure its pretty impressive.

And apprently yes, you can have more then a 4.0. Theres weighted and unweighted GPA'd, and it is possible to get higher then a 4.0. I personally don't believe in it the way I don't believe in working 110%. If you could work 110%, you would actually be working 100%, meanng when you said you work 100% usually, you really only work 90%. If 4.0 is the limit, its the limit. But, thats just my opinion.

It depends what courses you took. For most elite schools such as the Ivy League, you need to have a 3.7 in your core courses -- math, English, science, history.... they don't count health, phys ed, and some of the dippy non-core courses that kids take.

Also, you need to be taking the toughest courses your school has. Aps, honors courses, calculus, not business math, physcis, not environmental science. Most schools give you a boost in your GPA if you take honors or AP courses. THe colleges take out the boost, but they still pay attention to the fact that you did an AP course instead of a regular course.

You need a lot more than just a good GPA to get into an elite school. At one of the the elite schools one of my kids went to, they turned down over 500 Valedictorians who applied last year. They were smart and had good grades, but there wasnt enough about them to show that they were outstanding people! You need to have good grades AND be outstanding.

That is pretty good. Why don't you ask your guidance counselor those questions. That's what they are there for.
