Try the "underground railroad" ie: transportation of slaves from the South to the North during the civil war. Illinois was an integral part of it. Much is written and research would be a snap. Hit the facts only and you have a short essay. Add, some specific stories and it becomes comprehensive.

So basically out of interest, as i understand little about Illinois, I googled international files set in Illinois. There a center college attempting to break the list for most human beings reciting Lincoln's Farewell take care of, greatest Sand sculpture, a guy signing the bottom note, the most important amassing of ukulele gamers and a variety of of alternative others. basically google it.
