I was driving my car yesterday and I rolled my window down and heard a rattling noise. It kind of sounded like I was dragging something behind my car and it was scraping along the road. I put my car in park and it kept doing it. I have to drive on the freeway for an hour tomorrow. Will it be safe to do that or should I take it to a mechanic today? It is a '98 Ford Escort.

Could be the cat converter. If its broken down inside it will rattle. As for driving if a piece breaks off and plugs the exhaust you will loss almost all power . The car will overheat if you try to push it.If you OK around cars easy way to test this is hit the cat with your fist (make sure exhaust is cold ) If you hear the rattle at the cat there is your trouble. If not have it looked at last thing you need is to be stuck someway with a dead car.Hope I helped and good luck

I would do a walk around of your car look under it, look under your hood etc... to see if you see anything hanging down. If the car still makes the noice while in park the sound is coming from your engine and not something dragging on the ground. I would get it check by a mechanic today, you wouldn't want to get stuck on the side of a freeway with a car that won't run, and besides that if something is wrong it can only get worse.

I'd take it to a mechanic. Even if they just come outside and take a peek under the car at least you can feel a little more confident. If you don't know anything about cars, I would not risk driving an hour with a problem. Good luck!

damn like a loose pop can is putting lower than your vehicle? Or is it more suitable like a clunking? If its only a rattle its more suitable than in all probability an exhaust warmth look after or a backing plate on your brakes. If its a clunk it might nicely be many a variety of of issues. frequently the more serious it sounds, the more serious is is, get it appeared at only to make certain.

it probably is the muffler but try lifting the hood and if the rattle gets louder listen closely as it may be a broken bracket that hold the alternator or a/c compressor on
