Cold enough for glaciers to extend over much of what is today the US. And there have been several different Ice Ages in the past.

Probably the worlds average temp was about 15 degrees lower than it is today.

An ice age lasts between 12,000 and 50,000 years and is defined by the ice on the planet. What most people are not aware of is that we are currently still in an ice age (check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_age)! When the ice at the poles is melted, the ice age will be over. In theory we should have at least a couple of thousand years to wait for that, unless the actions of humanity interfere with the natural pattern...

So how cold was the ice age? Well check the temperature where you are and that's your answer ;)

Please excuse my pedantry. What you want is to know how much colder it was at the time we commonly refer to as the ice age. Well, 9 degrees (C) is the average difference. It may not sound a lot, but it makes a major difference to the climate.

In the last ice age the climate was only about 5 to 8 degrees C cooler on average than it is today. During that time ice covered most of the North American continent.

No one can accurately say but it was cold enough to cover the entire Northern Hemisphere and much of the Southern. In places the ice would have been several miles thick. The glaciers were big enough to move entire mountains and millions of tonnes of rocks were moved many miles. It cut and gouged the land beyond all recognition. It also exterminated many life forms and rendered many species extinct. It was very Cold.

It depends on were in the world you were and if it was summer or winter. Also there has been more than one ice age and ice ages often have warmer and cooler periods lasting decades.

About 25 degrees colder is a rough estimate at the general temperature.

Average temperature in summer was 5 degrees celcius.
ie; cold enough that snow fall didn't melt from one winter to next allowing the growth of glaciers.
