i have been offered a megane coupe sport for a nice price. the problem is that someone has tried to start the car with jump leads the wrong way round. The car now wont start at all!.What I want to know is what is the most damage that could have been done and approx how much ya reckon it will cost to be put right. I dont wanna buy a car which might seem a bargian to be robbed on repair bills cheers.

Hard to give a good answer here as there is plenty to go wrong
Yes it could be fuses and alternator as it is not normally polarity protected but if the engine management system has been damaged the cost could go on and on. It really needs a diagnostic run on it first to put you in a better picture of possible damage.
Cost could be as little as next to nothing to more that the worth of the car
Without that inspection it's impossible to say

If the electronics inside the car seem to still work, dashboard, lights, electric windows etc. then worst case scenario the starter motor has been destroyed. Not a huge job. If the electrics don't seem to work either then you could have any number of problems. Normally it would be a case of new fuses all round but being a French car the fuse protection system isn't always reliable. French Electronics are notoriously weak. Check the fuses, if they all look blown, put a new one into the electric windows and see if they work then. All systems will be blown or none, it won't get to some but not others.

Any piece of electronic circuitry without adequate reverse voltage protection will get fried. It's always the car with the dead battery that gets the damage when the jumper cables are reversed.
The computer, alternator, ignition module, and radio, are all susceptible. If you're lucky, it only blew up some fuses, maybe a fusible link or main fuse too. With some bad luck, one or more electrical components will get fried. This doesn't apply to things like window motors or automatic door locks.

i would try some ez fixes 1st before i bout the car . like check the Bendix's 1st by putting the leads back on the right way then cross the Bendix with a screw driver . if the car dose not turn over then it is not the Bendix's and may b the starter unfortunately this never seems to b an ez fix in less you are a good mechanic. .but those are 2 things i would have to know to buy that car..

Could have frizzed the engine's ECU, which can cost hunners to fix. If you can, start it from cold, & take it for a good run to check it out. Other electrics could be affected too, so make sure everything works.

Renault notoriously bad for electrics - sounds like you have blown the fuse box - and that will be expensive
