Superantispyware is free and very good. Also get Lavasoft ad-aware free edition. I have both on my computer and after running them the spyware programme I paid for, SpySweeper (which gets loads of awards,) doesn't find anything.
You can download them from: www.download.com.
Good antivirus software should also remove any spyware/trojans.
I use AOL Active Virus Scan. It's free and better than any of the 'paid for' anti virus I've used. (but you'd have to uninstall your current a/v before installing this.)

i had the same problem as you. i went to the Microsoft website and downloaded a free program called windows defender. it is a spyware remover. after it did a scan if found and deleted a file called zlob. after that the pop-up in the system tray went away. im hoping that did it.

Try the (free download) Spyware Terminator, sorry you will have to Google or similar for it, but I think it is a good addition to any computers protection.

Your computer probably has a Smitfraud infection. You will need to use a specialised removal tool such as SmitFraudFix v2.8:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
or
RogueFix:
http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm
To remove this pest.

Even more Smitfraud info. is here:
