Since it says that one third of the the number is 5 less, you have to add that 5 to the one third to make it equal to the one half. So: 1/3x+5=1/2x. Multiply both sides by 6, you get 2x+30=3x. Subtract 2x from both sides, and you get 30=x, or x =30.

Well... call the number you are looking for N
We know that
1/3 N = N/2 - 5
because that is a formula from the English. We read this as 1/3 a number equals 5 less than 1/2 that same number.

Now we can solve this by first multiplying both sides of the equation by 3 to get N by itself on the left.

3(1/3 N) = 3(N/2 - 5)
3/3 N=3N/2 - 15
N=3N/2 - 15

Now subtract 3N/2 from both sides

N - 3N/2 = -15
now multiply all terms by 2 to get the right side clear

2N -2(3N/2) = 2(-15)
2N - 3N = -30
-N = -30
N = 30

Lets check it by using the original equation

1/3 N = N/2 - 5
1/3 (30) = 30/2 - 5
10 = 10

Let x be your number.
Then the problem states that we must add 5 to
1/3 x to get 1/2 x.
So 1/3 x + 5 = 1/2 x,
1/6 x = 5
x = 30.
Check: 1/3 of 30 = 10, 1/2 of 30 = 15
and 10 + 5 = 15.

1/3 * x = 1/2 * x - 5
1/2 * x - 1/3 * x =5
1/6 * x = 5
x = 30
