I read a study that said that boys account 85% of all behavioral issues in school (primary school). I have found this to be the case at the school I work at (I am not an actual teacher but I do work with the children). I would say that more than half of the boys (these are boys in grades 1-4) have very poor social skils, act crass, show very little respect for property (toys, etc.) & want to do nothing else than play hand-held video games. They have no interest in reading books, etc. Are all boys like this across the country? Or is it just because our school is on the border of a high-crime section of the city. What, if anything, can be done to remedy this problem?

I don't know - that statistic sounds high. My son has the same trouble, but he is in the opposite environment as your group. With him I suspect mercury poisoning from his vaccinations. And this would account for the higher incidence in boys for the girls have a higher blood to brain barrier to mercury than boys (the mercury doesn't pass into the girls brains in as high proportion). All kids get a potentially poisoness amount of mercury that they were using to preserve vaccines so they would sit on the shelf longer. They just quit putting it in vaccines, but still put mercury in the flu shot.
So anyways we see plenty of autistic spectrum disorders rangeing from ADD -->tourettes-->OC--->Full blown autism etc...particularly in boys.

I'd say that reflects a lot of boys.
I think the problem has a lot to do with how the school system is set up. Boys are not usually kids who want to sit around in desks most of the day. The boys have historically been the ones who do a lot of moving, building, the hard, hands-on work. What sort of challenging, hands-on work are they being given? When the whole environment around you is wrong for you, then what's left for you to do? Act silly, be impressive... I mean, really, it's nothing new. Most adult men have their little macho complexes, too. When you look at history, who started wars or invaded so that they could have more? Add to the mix that more parents in general seem to just let their kids do whatever means that more boys are probably not having these tendencies curbed in any way.
Schools where the curriculum is more tailored to boys interests and styles, or even where they have the freedom to spend their day doing hands-on type work, have fewer behaviour problems.
ADDED:
I hope the person who posted and those reading do not misinterpret the 85% to mean that 85% of boys are poorly behaved. The statistic is that of all behaviour problems in school, 85% of those with problems are boys; the other 15% are girls.

It has been my experience that most primary school are staffed by female teachers that teach in a way they think is best. Not that they are wrong but boys learn differently than girls(in general). They do not enjoy sitting all day, coloring, and writing letters. Boys learn by doing. They need to move, they need action, why do you think they like the video games, it engages their minds.
Schools have also cut down on recess time and physical education. I think if schools increased physical activity and recess time they would see a dramatic decrease in behavior problems across the board.
I have a 6th grade daughter and a 7th grade son. Girls rock and so do boys. Not good not bad, just different!

Are those statistics the reason my graduating class had more men then women in the top 10 including a male valedictorian? The behavioral issues are caused by not allowing the parents to adjudicate the discipline of their children. If I believe my children deserve physical discipline(swats on the ***) for wrongdoings they have committed then they should get one. The best teacher is example.

I think that boys so poorly behaved because they think they have more to prove to people the whole "I'm all big and bad thing." They misbehave while girls will cry and carry on....
You can talk to them, spank them, threaten and everything else, but when it boils down, their never gunna change thats why they made the saying :BOYS WILL BE BOYS:

I think it's more common for boys than girls to be too energetic and impulsive. It's more challenging for them to be obedient. By the time they're teenagers girls could get themselves into as much trouble as boys.

I read a study that says 100% of all people who rely solely on statistics for their information have severe mental retardation.
If you want to be an uptight femenist go ahead, just don't try to justify it by twisting statistics around.
