i'm thinking of getting an external hard drive. i have an older computer that doesn't have as much memory as i want (and i'm too cheap to buy a new pc) . what are the pros and cons and would it be worth the money?

Pros, it's external, therefore if there is an electrical catastrophe of some type the external drive will be safe (as long as it's disconnected) and contain your full backup so that a restore of the computer to it's previous condition is a snap. If you mean by memory, hard drive space, that is one answer for you. Another option, since your money wise is to add a second internal hard drive. These tend to cost less for the same amount of drive space. It's not hard to install.

As you can see for a $69 WD external drive you get a 60GB drive, for the same $69 in a internal drive you'll get a 250GB WD hard drive! It can serve the same purpose as the external and be just as safe, after you do the backup, you could simply unplug the drive's power plug and then it would be isolated from electrical malaise. Just make sure the jumper settings are set to a "Master" (where WinXP lives) and "Slave" (the new hard drive) configuration.

Totally worth it because you can backup your entire system If your PC crashes and you have not saved anything it's likely that you will loose everything. So I recommend the external hard drive.

an older computer will have usb 1.0 which means slow usb connections. personally, i think you'd be better off getting a new hard drive completely. unless you were talking about memory like you were saying, then buy new memory. it's different stuff

i have 2 of them and they are already full.

you could buy a second internal hard drive and use it as a slave to store stuff on.

if you want to speed up your old pc, buy more memory.

people upgrade their existing systems to save money.

the downside of an older system is just smaller specs and inabilty to function properly when dealing with new software like power hungry games, etc.

the devil made computers to divert our attention away from the true path to enlightenment.......enjoy!
