I don't mean to be cruel, but my best friends older brother drives a race car and he IS a racist. So maybe you're onto something!

Ask the guy who made this notice.. and you will call the guy who drives a racecar a racist in case you opt for :) I have no issue And why is a guy or woman who races talked approximately as a racer yet a guy or woman who performs a piano isn't talked approximately as a painer? haha

because there is no meaning for pianist other than a person who plays a piano and there is already a meaning for the word racist and race car drivers do not under normal circumstances fit that mold

*snicker*

Dragon tries not to say "pianist" cuz it always ends up sounding dirty when she sez it. So she sez piano player, which would make a person who drives a racecar a racecar player.

Because they're called drivers. So if you call people who drive racecars drivers, why don't we call people who play paino players?

well pianor sounds a little odd.
The rule I teach my students is that you use -ist at the end of any word that ends in a vowel or a vowel sound. (unfortunately that doesn't even work!)
bassoon should be bassooner but it's bassoonist.
