I agree partly with what Sailor-- said. Youngsters become addicted to drugs because they want to escape reality by appeasing every body sense that works. The buzz, the heightened feeling of ecstasy is what they crave and they will continue to indulge in drugs until they learn that nobody owes them a thing to make a living for themselves and contribute something worthwhile.
For many, they will never learn and will become dependent upon the state or be taken to the cemetery too early in life.

Because they see the world as a hopeless place and they feel they don't have any future in it. They use drugs to escape from reality.

How much do you drink? How often? Under what circumstances? Do you smoke tobacco? How much? A lot? Chronically? Do you take anti-depressants? Regularly? How often?
Point is, they are self-medicating. Are you?
