How did Dan Flavin Do it?

Question

I want to know how he made his light scupltures. I am really big into his and other LED based works, and I would like to do some myself. The thing I am having a hard time with is knowing where to start. I don't know where to go to ask questions to learn and find answers. Any ideas?

His work with light began with what he called "icons," a series of painted canvases accented with halogen light fixtures.

In 1963 Flavin began to use only standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes mounted directly on walls. To provide context and to give it formal structure, Flavin used elements from painting, sculpture, and architecture.
