1. If your tile is shiny, it is a good idea to lightly sand the tile
to helpwith the adhesion process.
2. Clean the tile surface! Use a 50/50 solution of household ammonia
and water. You can also use a mild acid solution used for tile/grout
cleaning. This can be found at home and tile centers.
3. Rinse well and dry thoroughly. Should dry for about 24 hours.
4. Prime your tile with a high-quality adhesion primer. (320-00 Aqua
Borne Blockout/Undercoater White or Zinsser's latex based Bulls Eye
1-2-3 Primer Sealer). (Note: if the tiles will be subjected to water,
use BIN or other alcohol based primers.)
5. After the primer is thoroughly dry, apply two coats of a
high-quality finish paint. (Note: for areas subjected to
water/moisture, use alkyd or oil based finishes.)
6. To keep the tiled effect, use a thin brush and re-create grout
lines or if you want to get creative, now is the time to add your faux
finishes.
7. Allow your paint to dry for approximately 2 weeks to insure that
the paint is scratch/scuff resistant. You don't have to avoid the
room, just use caution.

You dont say where the tiles are. It is possible to paint tiles that do not get a lot of wear with melamine paint. I dont know if they have that in the USA , but in Canada, its sold in most stores. Its a polyurethane based paint that covers tiles wonderfully, and can even be used to paint laminate countertops. The key is to put on thin coats using a foam roller, and to let it dry for twelve hours between coats. After two or three coats, you have to allow the surface to cure for four or five days before using it. I have used this on kitchen counter tops and bathroom edging tiles quite satisfactorily, and it is listed for those purposes on the can

All depends on the tiles. If they are glazed ceramic, they need to be either sanded or primed. Otherwise, it's like painting glass, and the paint will peel or scratch off every time. Unglazed tiles would need something like masonry paint or primer, to ensure a good bond. Cheaper plastic tiles can be painted with any oil-based paint, but should still be lightly sanded (scuffed), or primed. I might be behind the times, but I've personally never heard of "tile paint."

I just painted my kitchen tiles yesterday using tile paint (new buyer-no money to replace them but paint was a quick and cheap fix).

Some things I learnt/good tips;

-Clean the tiles really well prior to starting. I cleaned them with bleach, then rinsed with water, and wiped with a lint free cloth.

-Use a good quality brush - This does matter, otherwise you will have a bad finish such as bristle marks.

-Finish each tile in an upward stroke, and be carefull not to apply too much paint in one go.

I used white paint and no undercoat/primer or whatnot. Look good with just the one coat however it does depend on the colour of the underlying tile.

Good luck!

You do not say if tiles are already attached.

If not, you can use acrylics and then slowly bake the tiles in the oven to permanently cure the paint.

You need a special paint and primer. You have to wear a mask, or even have it professioanly done. Go to your local HOme Depot/LOwes they will tell you the paint and supplies needed. It does look amazing when done right!
