Burping is an aide to get gas out of a babies stomach. If your baby is crying and when you pick it up and you feel the stomach distended, then go a head and burp it. Go ahead and start off by burping it for a shorter period after each feeding. If the results are good then you can "wean" him/her off burping, but you can always go back to it if you feel that they need help.

I've been meaning to ask the same question! My daughter is almost five months old and as of about a month ago I no longer stop mid-feeding to burp her (she now gets upset if I stop).
I wait until she's done and overall she handles it very well/burps just fine.

My baby started burping herself around 4 months.

I stopped burping when the baby started solids. By then she was able to burp herself.

Its a good idea to pat at least a few times after feeding, so there is no chance of a gas bubble, I always use to burp until around 6 mos.

I am still burping my baby after her nighttime bottle at 10 months. I like to make sure she gets all the gas out so she doesn't wait up in pain and screaming.

Try bouncing your baby on your knee to belch her. Mine doesn't burp easy but this helps. Wait a few minutes if nothing works you tried.
