I'm looking for something that is stylish, yet very warm. I heard that wool and cashmere are not the warmest. Llama fiber, which I haven't seen in New York, is said to be the warmest. What stores should I go to?

spent new years a few years back there, was minus 10 degrees farenheit when the ball dropped in time square. I took with me my long ( almost ankle length) cashmere coat, my down ski jacket and was just fine. The key is layers. Wear lined wool pants, warm socks. sweatesr, bring scarf and gloves. I have never heard that wool ad cashmere are not warm.

Lands End or LL Bean make these wonderful full length down coast that are pretty cute. They are more casual, but are certainly warm. kind of like the kind that people on the swim teams wear.

Alpaca fibre is supposed to be the warmest natural fibre but much depends on the style of the coat, and the way that the fibres are put togther. (can an insulating layer of air be trapped and prevent heat being lost) The warmest are not necessarily stylish, the only way would be to try many and wear whatever you feel compfortable with. My wife likes an Alpaca cape for style which is warm or a ski jacket for utility which is very warm!
