Unfortunately we live in a society where people feel the need to try to fit in and celebrity magazines and TV programmes and makeover shows all tell us that we need to conform. The need for acceptance into society is real but what needs to be addressed is societies image of who and what is acceptable.

People with low levels of self esteem are more vulnerable to the demands of what is ok to wear and what is ok to do. It is societies rules that we need to adhere to and corporations know that and push the situation further to drive profits.

It is like a lion attacking a weak or young animal. The helpless are most at risk. The need to conform is great. And the fact that someone tells us what to do takes away the need to blame ourselves for our mistakes, the instructions are out there for all to see.

Psychiatrists or councillors help people to take control of their own lives and make there own decisions once again. It is about control. But it is the weakest that need the help the most.

As much as possible I do make my own decisions. If I am unsure, I sometimes ask people for their opinion, but even then I just consider their opinions and still decide for myself.

I think the situation you describe is more common among young people, but as we get older we tend to care less about what others think, especially when it comes to what we wear or what's in fashion or what we should weigh. It is all part of the maturing process.

That's slave mentality. I wonder if they realize that's what they do when they rely on other people to make their decisions for them?

It's a lazy attitude amd yes, when it does not go right, they can say 'She made me do it!' How sick and pathetic.

I believe in doing it the way I feel works for me even if I am wrong. At the end of it all, I am responsible for me; no one else is. Besides, how can we grow and be strong in character when we are too lazy to make the effort - failure or not?

We have had others making decisions for us since the day we were born. Our parents told us what to eat, wear, when to take our baths, brush our teeth, How to tie our shoes, put our clothes on, etc.. Teachers taught us how to read, spell, add, subtract, etc.. We have bosses when we go to work. We have doctors that tell us what, when, and how to take our medication. So when we should be able to make our own decisions it becomes difficult. We always want another to help.

Amen to that. I try and be myself as much as possible. Humans are like sheep though most of the time they don't want to be different for fear of being viewed as strange or weird. I embrace my weirdness!

Actually everything is entirely up to ourselves. Everything else is just an opinion. No one can tell us what to do.
