I skipped a friends wedding because of finances and incredibly bad timing (college graduation, finals). Now the baby shower is occuring and I REALLY want to go but the flights are so expensive and I am in a bad financial situation in terms of not having much extra spending money. Average flights are $350.
Is this a viable excuse, or will she be able to hate me forever if I do not attend the shower.

I was actually going to tell you that there is no excuse for not attending a friends shower..... you can always help with decorating, set up, make food, etc.... However...... once I read your entire question, my opinion has changed. If you have to FLY... that is your excuse. You can't be expected to drop a few hundred dollars just to attend a shower. You can send a gift and call and explain that you would LOVE to be there, but simply can't afford that. I don't think by any means that your friend would not understand. I'm sure she knew as she wrote the invitation that people who are not local may not attend for that exact reason. Trust me, I've had a wedding, a baby shower, and will be having another one in a couple of months. When you invite people from another state... you just expect that most likely they won't come, but you will always invite and hope they'll be able to make it. Don't worry honey... send a gift or card and you'll be good.

Your friend should definately understand...just make sure she knows how much you regreat not being able to attend. Send your gift and a card with a really heartfelt note about your excitement over her upcoming attraction. Even better....call the hostess and ask if there is anything you can contribute to the shower to make it special!! Maybe you could purchase a diaper cake and that could be the centerpiece on the gift table....AND her gift from you. She would probably be realy touched by the sentiment and effort you put into that! I make diaper cakes, by the way....AND I work with practically any budget and ship ANYWHERE!!

Check out my site....if you like!

I have good friends spread out all over the place and when they aren't able to attend something for me I understand b/c money is always an issue- if they are a good friend then they will understand, just call them and explain the situation and be sure to mail them a little gift with a congrats card :)

Even if you lived in the same city...there is no obligation to attend a "shower" of any kind.

If you are a close friend, you should give a gift that not only suits your budget but is reflective of your relationship. If you live in another town, send it by courier or express mail, or perhaps with somone else who may be going.

She is your friend. She understands.

It is an acceptable reason not to go. Many people are having troubles with money these days. I would send a card with a personal note in it though.

I don't think she could get mad at you for not being able to afford plane tickets. Tell her the truth. Then the next time you see her, give her a small but thoughtful gift for herself or for the baby.

Do you know where she is registered? Many places like Babies R Us, Walmart and Target have gift registry's online. I would still send her a small gift to acknowledge her and the baby.

It is a perfectly acceptable reason not to go and if she is truly your friend she will understand.
