All public schools in New Jersey have off in honor of MLK Jr. Day. If you teach in a private school it is not mandatory for the school to give you off - you have to take a personal day.

I don't know what your states laws are, but as and educator, what would your plans be for MLK Day, if you were off?

Would you treat it like Chirstmas or Thanksgiving or is it just another day off? Would you further educate yourself and other about Dr King? Would you participate in community events?

Unless you teach under a year round system, do you really need another day of school off to sit at home and do nothing?

It's not a big deal of a holiday. I wonder why so many people trying to treat it like labor day or thanksgiving or christmas. Yea he was a good man but that was way many years ago and life goes on.

I think teachers have the day off. My parents always do. There probably won't be anybody in the office or board of Ed. to ask you to come in. Relax.

Only if you are a government employee, which I would think includes public schools. So I guess its up to the administrator of a private school to make that decision.
