Main Street Station is one of my favorite hotels in LV. I was just there in December. The rooms are nice and clean, nothing spectacular, yes, there is an in room safe, alarm clock, hair dryer, iron and board, I can't recall if there was a coffee pot or not...
The restaurants at MSS give you a variety of great food at terrific prices, it's one of the best places to eat in all of LV IMHO...The Garden Court Buffet is one of the best, breakfast is pretty good, lunch is a heck of a deal at $8, it's also one of the best set up buffets in all LV. The 777 brew club serves a very good steak. The Pullman Grill is only open certain days and times but it's worth every penny, a great place to eat dinner.
MSS is a great spot for a low roller such as myself, the first time I stayed there was through the LVA's POV offer of one night at $35 the next night free, any other nights at the casino rate which was $35>Sunday/Thursday and $50 Friday/Saturday. Since my first stay every other stay has been comped up front, no charge whatsoever. Even on my first stay they picked up all my meals, I have never paid for a meal at MSS, and no I'm not a high roller by any means. My average play is 5-6K per day, and that's through a Video Poker machine. Ones that I enjoy playing, obviously.
You too can take advantage of the LVA's POV if you wish, it does cost $37 for a one year membership, but IMHO the POV alone is worth many times that amount. Heck the Palms $50 coupon pays for the membership all by itself and there are 164 coupons in this years POV...Check it out at this site, see if you think it's something you could use.

Brenda Palmer is my host at MSS and I would highly recommend her to anyone...Brenda works evenings. During the day Gloria Jenkins is the host on duty, Gloria is a sweet heart with a great sense of humor. She's is generally the one I ask when we decide where we want to eat lunch/dinner.
The entire staff at MSS has always been very friendly..
When you check in, ask for a room on an upper floor that faces south, great view of the Stratosphere Tower and the strip...

I know you have to go over to the California Club to use the pool. Call them on their toll free number and ask - 1-800-713-8933. It's still a pretty cool place. I love the Pullman Grill. It's very unique and has an actual pullman railroad car in the resturant.

The only amenity is that it is close to other places that have actual amenities! I'm not kidding. It was one a great place, but it has been plagued with bad luck and every time it closes and reopens it loses something. It was once one of the coolest places in downtown, lots of unique features, but they have dulled it all down to bare minimum. sad really
