Hypothetical. Let's say I build a 5-piece standard size drum kit. The cost of materials is $1600 and I do all of the labor and hardwork by myself to assemble a beautiful kit. How much should I ask for? Keeping in mind all of the labor and the need to make a profit off it

There are times when hand made can mean a lot of money for the producer. However in this case I think you cannot compete with the mass producings of established makers. Ludwig is the name in drums. They will produce custom as well as stock and because of their manufacturing processes and experienced workers can produce these items at a much cheaper cost than you will ever be able to match. There are exceptions such as specialty drums like bongos, rope tension, etc. But for your standard sets you are wasting your time. Take a look at the website for Lawton Drums. They are in central Pennsyvania. They make custom drums also but use Ludwig parts. Best of luck.

Time yourself, then apply $15-20 an hour.

Thing is, I will find a 5-piece kit cheaper than $1600. Both my studio set and club/venue set are less than that. Perhaps you should find a buyer if you're going to be making money at it. If this is your first try I wouldn't try to sell it until you've got the experience.
