Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the sensation of a sound in the ear or head that is not being produced by an external source. The sound can be of any pitch or type, continuous or intermittent. There are many different disorders that can produce such symptoms.
It is quite common to have mild tinnitus, and around one in five people report they are occasionally affected. Around one in 200 people has tinnitus so badly that it affects their ability to lead a normal life.
Symptoms of tinnitus
The sensation of tinnitus is the sound of high-pitched whistling or buzzing, ringing or hissing. It can also be a quite complex sound, like the roar of an ocean. The sounds may be constant or come and go.
Whatever the cause of the tinnitus, it is almost always made worse by stress, which can be physical, emotional or psychological. Some people can clearly hear the sound of their tinnitus and are able to live with it quite happily. In others, the sound is terribly annoying and can often drive them to distraction. The sound can be in one or both ears, or perceived elsewhere in the head. It is equally common in men and women and can be associated with almost any disorder of the ear.

It's important to say that tinnitus is a symptom and not a disease. Some people will have tinnitus because their Cochlea is damaged. And in a few, it could be caused due to hearing loss. But of course, the most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to loud noises. The noise can be a sudden burst, or it could be a constant banging that hits the ear drum and travels inside.
A good guide you can read about tinnitus and some good natural remedies can be found here: http://tinnitus.toptips.org

Try wikipedia -
Tinnitus (IPA pronunciation: [tɪ'naɪtəs] or ['tɪnɪtəs][1], from the Latin word for "ringing"[2]) is the perception of sound in the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound(s).
Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as a ringing noise, but in some patients it takes the form of a buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound; or as ticking, clicking, roaring, "crickets," tunes, songs, or beeping. [3]. It has also been described as a "whooshing" sound, as of wind or waves [4].
Tinnitus is not itself a disease but an unwelcome symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes, including ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, and injury from loud noises. Tinnitus is also a side-effect of some oral medications, and may also result from an abnormally low level of serotonin.
The sound perceived may range from a quiet background noise to a signal loud enough to drown out all outside sounds. The term 'tinnitus' usually refers to more severe cases. A 1953 study (Heller and Bergman) of 80 tinnitus-free university students placed in a soundproofed room found that 93% reported hearing a buzzing, pulsing or whistling sound. However, it must not be assumed that this condition is normal -- cohort studies have demonstrated that damage to hearing from unnatural levels of noise exposure is very widespread in industrialized countries.[5] (see noise health effects)
Because tinnitus is often defined as a subjective phenomenon, it is difficult to measure using objective tests, such as by comparison to noise of known frequency and intensity, as in an audiometric test. The condition is often rated clinically on a simple scale from "slight" to "catastrophic" according to the practical difficulties it imposes, such as interference with sleep, quiet activities, or normal daily activities.[6] For research purposes, the more elaborate Tinnitus Handicap Inventory [7] is often used.

Assume you mean "tinnitus" which is ringing in your ears. You wil hear a high pitched whine or tone in addition to what you hear otherwise. See an ENT doctor or a hearing specialist to ensure that the cause isn't related to some other serious illness.

Ringing noise in the ears. Drives me mad when I think about it, and you just reminded me! (I don't really mind, I shall forget it again soon, by answering questions)
