Do you mean a physical fight? I am 53 years old and I have never been in a physical fight in my life. I settle or address disagreements with words and reason and if that isn't possible, I ignore it and walk away from it. The only situation I can think of that would make me react physically would be if my husband, children, or grandchildren were in danger and there was no other option.

I do Karate, and through this, I picked up a few philosophies.
Don't fight, unless your life or family/friends are in life-threatening danger, or you're going to get raped. If their holding a knife to your throat and want your wallet, etc, give it to them. It's when they've taken all you have, and the knife is still there, then you take action.
The other one, is Don't be there. Because if you're not there in the first place, if you walk away, ignore the insults, whatever, you have a better chance of not getting into a fight. Much better.

LOL.. When I was younger all they had to do was look as willing as me to fight. I've been in as many as 7 fistfights in the same day before.

Now that I'm older and pretend to be wiser it takes a whole lot more to provoke me. Here are some key things.

Threaten or grossly disrespect somebody in my care/protection. Whether they be a friend, my girlfriend or a relitive. If I feel that they are under my protection and somebody threatens them or otherwise grossly disrespects them I am going to step in using whatever force is necessary to resolve the situation favorably.

Attacking the helpless will provoke me instantly. Youngsters beating up on an old guy, somebody who's handicapped, men beating a woman, any adult causing harm to a child are some examples. It doesn't have to be physical attacks. I've yanked a couple clerks across counters in the past when they got smug with some poor lady and treated them unfairly.

Physical rudeness toward me or threats to me. Even if I'm going to lose, better to lose the fight and keep my self respect than to run from a fight and probably have to fight it anyway. Sometimes a small applicaiton of aggression or force can prevent an all out fight.

To protect my interests/property. Somebody comes up to my car with a baseball bat I'm not going just stand there and watch. This extends to people in my protection as well. A great example was when I lived in an apt in a high crime area. There was an elderly couple living next to me. I kind of took them under my wing and if folks bothered them I would stand up for them. So their car was never vandalized while I lived there. They moved out of there a week after I did. Hopefully to a safer neighborhood.

Extreme cruelty to animals. I don't take kindly to people abusing animals and if they go far enough they'll set me off. While I'm not going to run around a lab setting rats free I'm not going to watch people torture a dog or cat unless it's a poodle. If it's a poodle I might join in :) I HATE poodles.

If some gay guy tried to hit on me, if they were respectful I'd tell them to go away if not I'm decking them on the spot. If they make physical contact I'm hurting them. If I have to go get a weapon and come back to do it they are not walking away from a disrespect like that.

Basically you can roll it into somebody who breaks my moral/belief code or threatens me or somebody in my protection or that needs protecting. I long ago quit looking for fights. Been several years since I was in one actually. I also long ago learned how to head off many fights before they got to the boiling point. Heated arguements often lead to threats and I would respond to those threats. Doubt I've been in my last fight. Might even die in one someday. Can think of far worse ways to go.

Physically threatened, verbally abused, harming anyone in my family. I use to fight when someone looked at me wrong, but I think I grew up a bit.

It probably would take a bit before I would actually do anything now a days. I'm not scared to be hit or anything, but I am scared of catching anything like AIDS, HIV, HEPATITIS. That's what freak me out!

All reasoning and logic are lost as adrenaline hits the veins. Consequences and accountability are shadowed by hate and misunderstanding, in which, when hate and misunderstanding leave the scene, REALITY steps forward, followed closely by Consequences and Accountability. After all said and done...Guilt is left standing alone, with evidence of adrenaline had been present. Reasoning and Logic will never be heard from again..

consider the validity of the reason. does the purpose have a relevant effect to your life or the life of someone you really care about? also, don't fight unless you're ready to face the consequences. evaluate the situation carefully. not all battles are worth fighting.

In a nutshell, you must fight someone if there's something wrong. Fighting (unless it's your job as a professional fighter) , ther reasons vary according to willingness and necessity

If they threaten or harm anyone in my family, or harm me personally. Then all bets are off, there are no "rules of war" and anything goes.

I will then do whatever I feel necessary to put them down hard, fast, and for good.

Short of that, however, I mostly just insult them.

I would only fight with someone if they were physically trying to harm me.
