I have a 2000 Plymouth Voyager. 112.000 miles, last week I took it to the mechanic to change the timing belt (it broke while driving). Today when I start the engine on, it start perfoming some kind of check. On the miles displays it showed "CHEC 1" and the temperature, MPH indicator and Gas indicator starting to move. Then it displaid "CHEC 2" and the PRND12 indicator, showed some squares moving, then It showed CHEC 3 and I don't remember what happend, then it showed Code 999. And that was it. I took it back to the mechanic, but he looks like he doesn't know for sure what is going on. He told me to wait and see if that happens again......do you guys have any clues of what might be happening?

Sounds like you some how activated the self diagnostic test.

Try this:

With the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the TRIP and RESET buttons.
While holding the TRIP and RESET button turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Continue to hold the TRIP and RESET buttons until the word CODE appears in the odometer windows (about five seconds) then release the buttons. If a problem exists, the system will display Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) If no problem exists, the code 999 (End Test) will momentarily appear.

Typically code 999 means no errors detected so you should be fine if you indeed saw a 999

Other codes you may see:
Codes: 110 memory fault in cluster
111 calibration fault in cluster
905 not CCD bus message from TCM,
921 odo fault from BCM,
940 no CCD bus message from PCM.
999 end of test (if this is the only code, no errors detected)

What happened is, that the computer was reset.
Check 1 is testing the digital display
Check 2 is testing the electrical power
I dont remember what check 3 is.
Code 999 just means that the computer has been reset.

A computer resetting after the power has been disconnected is common. Pop the hood, make sure that all the electrical connections are secure, push in the relays and fuses to see that they are seated properly, and make sure that your battery has a solid connections with no corrosion around the terminals.
What you need to look for, is that in a week, if you start your car, and the digital display resets again, then you might have a short in the system.

Disconnect your battery for five minutes. Re connect and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it. Call your local Dodge dealer and see what they recommend to resolve the issue. When any electronic part is disconnected these days a code flashes to your on board computer and it causes this problem unless the dealer resets the computer so all the crazy lights go out. Usually the computer will reset automadically after it's been driven 100-500 miles

It's probably because the timing belt broke. There is an on board computer that analyzes your engine. It picked up the belt when it broke. The belt is also hooked to the alternator.

If you take the positive battery cable off the battery for about 15 minuets this will re-set the computer and the lights should go out and return to normal. If it doesn't then you have to have a "Certified" mechanic hook up an engine analyzer to the computer and find out the problem.

It should be fine when you unhook the battery cable then wait at least 15 minuets before hooking it back up.

Sounds to me like it was doing a self check after having the battery disconnected when the timing belt was being changed.

Code 999 isn't an official OBD II trouble code so I'm betting your vehicle is fine and you're worried about why there are bubbles in the water when the water boils.

you car went through what is called a diagnostics cheek .
usually you need to put a diagnostic key in to make this happen. may be it was still going through the test when u got it back.
if it happens again take it to a different mechanic ..
some times when you get the belt changed and the tentioner is not reinstalled right . it will send it back into diagnostic cheek because it dose not see the problem as being fixed
