My wife and I decided to raise our kids in Chicago rather than move to a suburb or to a small town and we are very happy with our choice.
Living in the city is an education you cannot give your children in the homogeneous suburbs. Our immediate neighborhood has million dollar homes and people renting from paycheck to paycheck and everything in between. The schools have whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and everything else the planet has to offer. We have good schools and not so good schools, but there are plenty of opportunities to choose magnet schools, or charter schools, and broad networks of private schools as well.
Kids love the parks, they love having neighbors so close and they love being part of a vibrant urban neighborhood.
I'm appreciate that and urban childhood may not be the best choice for everyone, but I am disappointed by some of the stereotypical answers you have received. I don't think you are getting much in the way of accurate information from experienced sources.

No. Chicago used to be a great city for kids but not anymore. A lot of kids programs have been cut. The budget for education gets cut every year. Tuition is high while financial aid remains unchanged. There isn't a whole lot for children and teenagers to do. As mentioned before, the city is all about the dollar. Doing anything here costs money. But, um, Chicago is definitely dog-friendly (humans & animals alike).

I live in a western Chicago suburb (St. Charles).
Here is a link so you can see for yourself:
We are raising our two kids here (13 and 18). It's a great place!

yes, depending on which part of the city.
I think its a good place due to the history and all of the culture here. we have historical landmarks and tours avalible so people/children can learn about them.
we have sections of the city for each ethnic group, as well as mixed sections. we have feasts and specials on a regular basis- which can be educational when its about another culture. we have a theater district, music centers, zoos, the Shed, and so many others places that are fun but also teacher children things
-I consider a lot of surrounding neighborhoods to be part of the city, but I was mainly talking about the actuall city and downtown- but if you live in a surrounded neighborhood you will be abel to go to those places often

We deal a LOT with people from Chicago. It depend what income bracket you are in. The rich(silver spoon class) are brought up with no value of hard work and the meaning of money. It is not a learning option for them.
The less fortunate lower class/poor rarely make it out of their social group because of the lack of options available for them to suceed.
Chicago is like any other large metro area(LA., NYC, etc)....all about the almighty $!

My uncle and his family lived there for a while and they ended up moving out of the city because they didn't want the kids to grow up in the city.

The city itself isn't so good for a family, but the suburbs are pretty cool. Usually the people are snobby but they will deal with it, just tell them that their kid is ugly and they wont talk to you anymore, thus no more snobs!
