In reality, there was never a communist country that Marx and Engels envisioned. Authorities used the idea of communism to create dictator and overpowering governments. China is no exception to this.
China is essentially not a communist country, but a country with overpowering party that in the past did not care too much about labor, which is the essence of the theory of communism.
Now that the Chinese government noticed they might lose the control and support from Chinese people without developing as fast as other countries, they decided to implement capitalistic system. Which is the system you are looking at now. Next 10 to 30 years will be a big challenge for the Chinese government and the people of China. The party noticed that the only way for China to grow is to take a drastic measure by privatizing many of the industries. This caused higher unemployment and many bankruptcies in the first few years, but with laxed government intervention, multinationals quickly jumped in and rescued the Chinese economy.
Now, you are asking whether China is heading towards Capitalism or not. Well, they have already directed their futures towards the Capitalism by privatizing and creating much more open market and less control by the government. In order for you to know whether they will go through with this is whether the party is willing to lose much of their power. Since democracy is only proven match for Capitalism, you have to consider that Chinese government will have to choose whether or not to open the political system. Voting and allowing other parties to develop will be the essence. But you have to ask yourself whether they will let this happen. For the Chinese government to hold its power, they will have to intervene to display its power and control. If they let the political system open, then they will be facing downfall and allowing other parties to hold its current power. They will enjoy the growth, though growth is only in small portions of China, it will allow the government to enjoy its power, yet there will be struggles to keep the power since they will eventually face higher labor cost and resource cost... and competition from other nations. How would they react to this will be the significance of the future of China.
My prediction is that the Chinese government will lose its power and they will eventually be overtaken by more liberal government. During this time, we may see some financial crisis and downfalls. But at the end it will be a capitalist country, yet it won't have as much success as the U.S.
If not, you will see that a new developed nation with new system that is proven to work. This will show the world that what Americans talk about all the time "democracy is the only thing that goes well with capitalism" would be wrong. More controlling and overpowering government which do not have give much room for democracy will prevail with capitalism.

I like this one. China was very communist, something they argued about with the Soviets for some time. It's amazing how far their economy has come since the first few "economic developement zones" were established. They have come from third world status to honest to God superpower. They are embracing capitolism like true Yankees. Let's hope their economic adaptability is repeated in the social and political relms. Nixon believed a capitalist society had to be a free democratic society. Unfortunatly we have far to many contradictory examples to have much confidence in that particular outcome.

China is essentially capitalist now, economically. They are communist politically. The question is, will capitalism eventually result in democracy in their case?
