Try to come up with a main character for your story. Write down a description - male, female, eye color, etc. etc.
Then take this character and imagine then in some odd place or scenario – anything goes! Write down ideas on what would have to happen to your character or how they would react to the scenario you placed them in.
You can do this for multiple characters if you like.
This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out some characters and give you insight into what you may want to happen to this type of character in a potential story. You may even come up with multiple story lines!
Strong well crafted main characters can inspire readers to love your story as well as drive you to write a great story for these imagined beings to be in! :-)

There are a number of ways to come up with ideas for stories, and each writer has their own unique method. I personally get my best ideas when travelling, or when conversing with others... or both. Finding what drives your ideas is quintessential to the writing process, especially in the early stages.
Write what you know. For one thing, it is much more difficult to write something you have never witnessed or experienced. For another, if you are interested in the subject matter, chances are your reader will be as well, because your voice on the page will carry with it an interest
Sometimes it helps to talk with others who have had an experience you wish to write about. Sometimes it helps to try to experience it yourself. Try to see more than one side of the experience, from a plethra of perspectives.
A few means of coming up with ideas:
1. Read, read, read, read, read... and write down any thought or ideas that come to you as your do so.
2. Whether writing fiction or non-fiction, your own unique experiences make for great material.
3. Read the newspaper or watch CNN... the whole story is never there. Try to figure out what isn't being said and say, "What if..."
4. Go do something you've never done before.
5. Take sides on any issue... political or otherwise and wirte a story that justifies that perspective.
6. Reply to another author's story. Typically, a story will contain some statement... some point that is proven through the course of the story. Write another that disproves it.
I personally have an extensive library of writing manuals that I have read or am in the process of reading. There's plenty of information in them. Some of it is useful. Some of it isn't. There really isn't a cut in stone method for writing, but reading what others have done can help guide you into something that works for you.

Maybe meditation would help. Also if you have kept a journal through the years, then review the entries. There might be some things in it that would strike up a story line. Reading other authors is also good as you could continue on something that was just mentioned in passing. Good luck!

Look at your own life experience and ask yourself, what if? What if I got close to this guy I liked in H.S. and found out his family was making millions dealing drugs? Or what if I became friends with this girl that was really smart and she went on to discover a cure for cancer? You get the idea, it can go anywhere your creativity creates.

If you want your story to be unique then you should look for subjects from which writers usually shy away, whether they are politically incorrect or touching certain taboos, fears. But you have to be brave in this case.
Also, let your mind wander...no direction, no purpose, let it all come, there are no limits, no inhibitions, nu musts, no don'ts.

In the words, or some to that effect, of my Granddaughter's favorite television character,"Sounds like you need to sit in your thinking chair." That's going to depend on what you want to write and the actual type of story you're wanting to do.

Read newspapers, watch TV News, watch people and read Yahoo answers. There's lots of "book fodder" in this stuff.
