This is a great question, but the answer is, depends on what you want to pay in the long run.

Let me explain....

You hear this same quote on college campuses across the nation, "Why do the price of books go up every year?"

The answer is simple. College students are causing the price to go up. How you say? Here is how....

Every time a college student sells a book back, and it in turn is sold to another student, the publisher who produced that book no longer gets the money for it. When the publisher has to supply more books, they have to up the price because it still costs the same to produce the book, pay the author, etc. In fact, the cost of paper is higher every time, so it has to go up. If students would stop selling back books or buying used books, the price would not go up so much.

Also, some students are illegally copying books and other illegal activities, causing the same effect as above.

So the answer is quite simple (and it's really a question to you).

Do you want to pay more now or later? If you are just starting college, probably pretty important. If you are about to graduate, maybe not so much.

Just something for you to think about!

Good Luck and study hard!

The best way to get really cheap books by the way is to marry a textbook sales rep. :)

If you go online to either chapters/indigo or amazon both of these sites offer text books that are used or at reduced prices. They work as the middle person for companies that are selling their texts. You can also check with the institution that you plan to attend, as a lot of them buy back books at the beginning of the semester and resell them at reduced rates through the Book stores. If you are having trouble affording some of the texts are also on loan at the library and you can just take them out and keep renewing them throughout the semester. I know I just spent two hundred dollars on my books and this was just for two courses. However I must say that this is the cheapest I have gotten off yet.

Although it's always good to shop around on the internet, there are a few sites that I've found are great for buying textbooks. My absolute favourite is http://www.half.com/. The site is run by eBay, though there are no auctions involved. You can buy books from retailers and other users, even brand-new unused books can be bought at a discount. Another great site is http://www.amazon.com/. You may already that they do sell merchandise at discounts, you also buy textbooks. Like half.com, you can buy the books from other users.

www.half.com
www.ebay.com
www.barnesandnoble.com

Also try to share books with your friends if you can or ask your prof if you can use the next edition (if they want the 7th ask if you can use the 6th) since often times the page numbers are the only changes made.

if your school library has a textbook reserve department you could borrow and read it on the spot. Or else, half.com.
