I am from the western New York area, and am trying to find out my Indian Heritage. People keep telling me there is a way with DNA testing, but every time I contact someone, they give me the run-around.
They say I have to know which tribe; but how can I if my ancestors wanted to keep it hidden
I am sick of putting white when asked my race, because I am definately NOT 100% WHITE...no one ever has something that says mixed...I would like to know everything I am...
There are many reason each person should know all of their ethnic heritage. It is hard runnig around all your life not knowing who YOU REALLY ARE...I feel like I am from another planet sometimes, and this is very depressing.

I am in the same boat. When my mother was born, it was kept a secret that her father was NA.

I havent searched, but there is a book or video that you can buy from the Southwest Indian Foundation entitled How to Trace your indian (or NA) heritage.

If you want to claim your race, do not check white, just check NA. If you are asked for proof, ask them to prove their race.

You are not what your ancestors were. You are a unique person. If you like the NA way of living, learn it and practice it.

As far as which tribe, even some NA who are 100 percent NA come from different tribes.

Oh, and my cousin lived on a res for a year, and became a member of the Cherokee tribe he livid with.

what are you asking? there are dna test available through the mail to determine if you have any american indian in you. costs about $300 dollars- what is the run-a-round about that?
here is one site, there are many to choose from- http://www.genetree.com/ancestral/

also, you can check the american indian race box if you are more comfortable doing that- but if it is for college admission or has other legal ramifications, you will have to prove at least 25% minority blood to qualify. if you think someone in your family is hiding your native american background, explain to them that you could save a lot of money on a college application if you can prove you're 25% (or more) american indian.

and also, you sound like you have some kind of hang up about your race classification. maybe you should study the history of where native americans came from. a dna test might open your eyes to your TRUE origins, which btw, were not in western NY.
