I think it is because they can sometimes look so human. They mimic our behavior, and we laugh, much as we would at a small child that would attempt to do the same things. They are fascinating animals, and when my daughter was little, "the monkey house" at the zoo was her favorite place, especially the area for the babies, who were about her size.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who took a comedy class, and one of the things he learned is that words with the "K" sound in it are funny, in general.
