Ignoring the gentleman above me, I am along the lines of the first answer. They neednt be hard but it seems that you should consult a lactation specialist if you are having a problem nursing. Generally, the hospitals have someone they refer you to or get to call you back at no charge.

If you are dealing with flat or inverted nipples, please see a lactation consultant right away. Your nipples do not need to be hard in order for the baby to nurse.
In the mean time, when you are easing the baby on to latch, take your thumb on the top of the areola and your index finger on the bottom the areola and make a "sandwich" so that you can ensure that the baby is getting a deep enough latch.
There are breastshells that can be purchased to help with flat or inverted nipples and different techniques as well to draw your nipples out for better breastfeeding. Your lactation consultant can help you with this.

Please also consider finding a local Le leche League, they can provide support and breastfeeding help at no cost to you. Here is a link so you can find a local chapter.

Your nipples don't need to be "hard" while breastfeeding.
Are you dealing with flat or inverted nipples and you're concerned about drawing them out?

Why would your nipples need to be hard? I really hope you aren't some pedophile getting a kick out of this!

They shouldn't be hard - soft and pliable is what the baby needs.
