This might seem strange to some, but I would like input please. My grand daughter, whom I love more than anything and is very precious to me, has just started her period. Her mom and I are very proud, (she doesn't quite feel this way yet). I would like to give her a gift to commemorate this milestone in her life. A keepsake of sorts. My childhood was such a disaster and it's important to me that my children and grandchildren have special memories of theirs and of me when I'm gone. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Aha! I just went through this with my daughter, who is 10.

I got her a sterling silver necklace and her first pair of (small) dangle earrings. They had a moon and star on them (honoring a woman's moon-time) and were just perfect.

I think that's a great idea. It's important to celebrate these milestones, they have been traditionally recognized for thousands of years.

I had a big celebration (my mom gave for me) when I reached menarche and did the same for my daughter (women only) We ate and had a bit of champagne. For gifts I suggest jewellry, a nice watch as this is a special time. Now is a time to celebrate, your granddaughter has become a woman, the most powerful creature on the planet!

Maybe it's me, but I would have died of embarrassment at more acknowledgement of this - the age it happens is awkward and sensitive and I think the the less mention of the actual occasion by people the better. But you sound like a very nice grandma and only want to mark a turning point toward adulthood in her life, so maybe a piece of real jewelry, like pearls or something.

A journal, a gift card to Victoria's Secret for replacement panties (oops), a book about coming of age.

I think it's wonderful you are celebrating life! This was a very hush-hush shameful thing in my family and yet, women experience this.

Here is one list of possible books: http://www.scils.rutgers.edu/~kvander/YoungAdult/age.html

PLEASE do not make too much over it !
I am 47 years old, and I STILL cringe when I remember when I got my first period.
My mother, father, sister and I loaded up in the car, went to a local drugstore, EVERYONE went in and followed my mom to the seciton with the 'stuff' to buy, kotex pads with the BELT, for all of you retro gals out there that remember THOSE.... total embarrassment standing at the cash register and could've just shriveled up and died on the spot.......
Why don't you buy her a hope chest, and add a item to it every year for her for her future independence when she leaves home?
