i need to learn how to sew. i have tried in the past but i am too impatient with sewing by hand and i dont have a sewing machine to learn with. for anyone who sews or owns a machine what type would u recomend? i am very clumsy with machines so i would need one that would be easy to use and learn, but also good quality that will handle all types of sewing. also how much would this cost? thank you

Any basic machine with a zig-zag stitch and possibly a simple buttonholer will do fine for a long, long time. If you stay with a major name brand - like Kenmore or Singer, you will always be able to get replacement parts, add-ons (like the buttonholer) and have the machine oiled and cleaned once in awhile. the Swiss and German made machines are very nice and dependable, too - Bernina, New Home (now Janome), Pfaff - these are usually sold by sewing machine dealers - independent stores.

You want a zig-zag stitch because it allows you to finish raw edges, and do streatchy fabrics, like t-shirt and sweatshirt material. Most of this kind of basic, mechanical (not computer or electronic) machines can be found for under $200. sometimes you can get a decent one at a garage sale, or check the local sweing machine stores - they sometimes take trade-ins & have them to sell.

I know this sounds so crazy but when I started sewing I went out and bought a children's sewing machine. It was very easy to use and the directions was clear and cut. A good one with multi sewing usu age will run u about 100. But please shop around. I was using a pro sewing machine in a year. It worked for me and I am a bit clumsy too. It may work for you

For my first machine I went to walmart and bought one for around $100.
It doesn't really matter what brand you buy. You just want to make sure you don't have one that's going to be too overwhelming. The computerized machines are confusing even for me, and I've been sewing for well over 30 years. Your local sewing store should offer classes, and they usually supply the machines for class. (You will have to have your own for home practice.)

I'm pretty much a beginner, and I bought a New Home HF 106. It cost about $90. It's simple to use and does all of the important stuff. I like it.
