He is coming to LA to try to bring soccer up from being a secondary sport in the US. The backers of soccer in the US brought Pele to the US at the end of his career in the 70s to try to increase the popularity of soccer here. It spurred interest in markets that have a large immigrant population, which is why LA makes sense for Beckham. The remoteness of this occurring is reflected in the promised paycheck to Beckham.
In essence, the backers of Major League Soccer in the US have decided to gamble on paying Beckham a quarter billion over 5 years and either making the sport more popular or going out of business.
BTW, the payment of a quarter billion dollars to an athlete is not unprecedented here. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is signed to a $250 million ten year deal.

most definitely not. and its not as if david beckham's performances during the last few years and lack of silverware on his part for playing for real madrid warrants such a ridiculously high wage, anyway. if anything he doesn't deserve it.
that is why i think it would be a good thing if football players salaries were capped because the amount of money these so called athletes are earning, these days is totally unjustified and ludicrously insane. doctors, teachers, nurses, care assistants earn much less than football players- and yet they put in 10 times more effort than a bunch of blokes kicking a ball around. if it is not careful, then football or soccer, if you're american in a few years time will be regarded by many as a money making business, as opposed to being a sport. and that would be awful

hes taken a drop hasn't he from £120,000 a week to £70,000, how the heart bleeds? for kicking a bag of wind about, mind you hes not done much of that has he?is that why hes going 2 America?hey on a serious note though, if people will pay ludicrous amounts of money, 2 see them play, and i mean play, then one can only blame oneself, that's why i refuse to follow these kind of so called sportsmen? many a working man/woman will not earn this stupid amount in a lifetime ,let alone a week? but if people are going to pay to see these so called superstars play that have never even come close to winning a world cup or any other major title, then ,well ,iam not going to tell you the outcome cos they wont be getting a penny out of me towards there wages?

If people want to pay others that amount of money its up to them. Its madness seeing as he's just about washed up as a footballer. Judging by his past performances he just aint worth it, but if his advertising pull is still going strong think of how much the people selling gear off his name stand to make. Its down to the consumer at the end of the day, how many people buy Hello magazine etc and buy into all the Beckham/Posh machine - certainly not me I can't stand the skinny bint.

i know it seems kind of ridiculous but i think David Beckham deserves the money he's being offered..i mean this is a world class player who was benched most of the time at Real Madrid....i think he landed the world's best deal ever concerning sports...but you should look at it in the perspective of..he's moving to the U.S. where he's bring a bigger fan base dedicated to football....i mean he has worked had to get to that spot.....it sounds a bit lucrative that a U.S. team is willing to pay hiim that much money but i think there's alot that team is going to gain from having him as one of their players...i know the team has sold about 1000 season tickets to a match which Beckham is going to feature in August...in terms of is it immoral...i think if the team wanted to put it's money to education or health it would do it...it's sad but what can you do....maybe Beckham will give some of his cash to charity....but whatever he or the company do with the money is totally their own decision and responsibility......

agree but I would pay anything that he and his miserable skeleton of a wife would clear off to the States where I am sure that Posh would be happier spending her time mixing with A list celebs and shopping on Rodeo Drive. I just get fed up with her, she has everything but she always looks so MISERABLE. And David B looks lovely but that voice of his, drives me crazy.
So yes, it's worth it to get rid of the tiresome two ..

I think it's absolutely ludicrous for him to say that he is not doing it for the money, if he isn't why does he need £70,000 per day?
It is disgraceful ho much footballers are paid, but let's be honest for the vast majority of us, if we can make money we'll take it, so we can't really judge him.

It's great money for a football who is finished.
Just as long as he does not do a africa poverty advert saying "These people need money"
He should try donating his wages for year, since he is already a multi millionaire

Its outrageous. One years earnings would pay for 2000 nurses in the UK. Nurses jobs are being cut (even though they are desperately needed) because there is not enough cash in the NHS. Puts it in perspective doesnt it?!
Shame on this society for making football as 'important' as it is.
