Female circumcision is where they remove the clitoris on a female (usually a baby). They do this because they want the woman to be chaste. This is mostly done in Africa. Is this wrong or should it be considered a cultural issue?

Correction: They are usually young girls, not babies when this is done.

"Female Circumcision in America.

The practice of FC has traditionally been thought of as purely an African or Islamic practice, with no impact on Western society. In actual fact, FC has been in the U.S. for quite a number of years. In the 1880's it was proposed as a health measure similar to that of male circumcision, and remained in use up till the 1930's. The reasoning behind the use of both types of circumcision was that it would cure masturbation and keep the genitals cleaner and less prone to infections. (Lightfoot-Klein, 1998) It is verifiable that FC does prevent cancer of the cervix and certain venereal diseases. There are some reports of FC being performed in the 1950's; clitoridectomies performed to cure nymphomania and melancholia in women. (Burstyn, 1995) Today, the practice is illegal in the U.K., though there is still no law against it in the U.S., and it is spreading throughout America as immigrant families from cultures that traditionally practice FC move here and bring their customs with them. Legislation is currently moving through Congress to make FC a felony, and New York, North Dakota and Minnesota currently have laws prohibiting FC unless it is mandated by a medical emergency. (Burstyn, 1995) Activist and women's rights groups like RAINBO, Population Action International, and Equality Now are joining with women who have experienced FC and are opposed to it, and are working to promote awareness of FC among the American public. Their main argument is that FC is performed in many cases without the consent of the woman, and that it is above all a means to subjugate women's sexuality and remove control over their own bodies. It has been called child abuse and female slavery, and has been viewed as an attempt to take power away from women; concerns also central to the pro-choice view on abortion".

This is beyond wrong...To mutilate a little girl child in that way for any reason is the worst child abuse I had ever heard of. It is painful, thousands have died for the sake of some religious reason that is probably not at all relevant today. From the reading I have done on the subject, some women who have had this done to them said that is done to them to insure they are "clean" and pure when presented to a husband, and they literally have to be "opened up" on the wedding night. Their bodily functions (such as using the bathroom, childbirth) can be excruciatingly painful. Even if only the clitoris is removed, the woman can never experience certain levels of sexual pleasure. Although it could be considered a cultural issue, it should definitely be outlawed in every country. Nobody should have to suffer this way because of a religious belief.

It's just wrong. We circumcise the boys because it's said to be healthier than leaving it uncircumcised. It doesn't affect their ability to reproduce or enjoy sex. There's no reason for them to do that to the girls except they believe this makes her of more use to her husband. It doesn't stop her from having babies but without a clitoris it keeps her from having orgasms. They are brought up to believe their job is to pleasure their husbands without any enjoyment of their own. The ones who refused were labeled unclean and whores and were not worthy of marriage. It's done by a midwife or priestess who often doesn't have sharp sterile equipment, they are young girls not babies when they have this done. There is no thought to the pain or infections that come from this procedure. It's barbaric and totally unnecessary.

Well, it's all or nothing...if they can do it to little boys...
I think that circumcision, male or female, is wrong! It's mutilation and it shouldn't be the parents' choice.

it's horrible but true. i saw this special on hbo where this african lady was trying to get her clitoris surgically put back on but doctors were skeptical if she would ever be able to climax and enjoy sex with her husband. female circumcision is barbaric and unnatural. if we werent meant to have one, we wouldnt have been born with one.
