I think the sugar part is a little off. Probably would become a little hard.
Baking soda is excellent and cheap. you can put it down your kitchen sink after 3 months in the fridge, pour 1 cup of vinegar. Bingo, presto - clean drain too.

wash the fridge with bicarb and put a small foot off a pair of old tights filled with cat litter in at the back of the fridge as a deoderiser i saw this on how clean is your house

your ment to use half a lemon and salt, make loads of slashes in the lemon and put loads of salt on,
i leave them in my fridge and freezer all the time and it does work,
give it a squeeze every couple of days till some lemon juice comes out and it will smell really strong again it should last about 2 weeks then replace

I knew someone who put a large cut-up onion into an empty fridge. She let it there overnight... otherwise baking soda.

believe it or not - newspaper, crumpled up newspaper overnight.
My mom had someone tell her this years ago. Works wonderfully, works good too if you are going away and have to leave the fridge empty keeps that yucky smell away.
