Shelby is a great name for a girl or a boy, but if you love the name Maxine, go with it. Kids will come up with something to tease others about regardless, so don't let that stop you. But I do love the name Max for a boy too. Really cute and it's not that common.
I'm just glad you're not naming your child Jennifer or Jacob! Cute names but they'd have about 12 other kids in their class with the same name.

I've always thought that first names should be something you want to call your child every day, and middle names should be something with more meaning.
Either Shelby or Maxine would make a nice middle name.
Or you can take a special memory of your grandmother and turn that into a name. For example, if your grandmother used to take you to the seashore every year, you might consider using the name Hali which means ocean. Or if you know that your grandmother loved Violets, you can use that as a first or middle name.
In terms of boy names...Max is an obvious way to go. The name Shelby means "from the town in the hollow". Most baby name searches will let you search by meaning too. If you do a search for "hollow" and boys names, you come up with names like Corey, Holden and Logan. There are all sorts of ways you can honor someone with a name if you want to be creative.

I've heard of boys named Shelby. You could always name a boy Max, Maxim, Maxamillian, Maxwell.
As far as Maxine being called Maxi Pad. It will happen. It really doesn't matter what your name is; if they are going to pick on you, they will. You could also reverse the name Shelby Maxine or just use one name.
Unless you are pregnant right now, you have plenty of time to make the decision. I like Maxine. It is an assertive name and the little girl that carries it will have to grow into it.

Children will find a way to make fun of other children no matter what their name is. If you like Maxine Shelby, then name her that. It is nice that you want to name her after her grandma. Like other people have said it doesn't have to be the exact same name, though. If you want to call her Shelby, you could use her middle name or you could make Shelby her first name. Shelby Maxine is a pretty name. You could also combine the two names into one and then use it with another name you like, such as MaShel ____ or ____ MaShel. Other ways to combine the names could be MaShelby, Shelma, Elma, NeShel, Maxeline, Xeline, Shelxine, Sheline, Heline, Eline, Helin, Elin, or Nel. For a boy, you could name him Shelby or any name starting with Max. Some options combining Maxine and Shelby for a boy are Maxelin, Maxel, Maxby, Xelin, Axel, or Neel. Ofcourse, you also have the option to just use one of the two names as either a first or a middle name. You can just use whatever names you like starting with M and S, too. Giving your baby the same initials would still be a good way to honor your mom. Have you thought of naming your baby after your mom's favorite singer, place, book, color, etc...? This would still honor your mom. There are many ways to remember and honor your mom through your child's name without using the exact same name. Congrats and I hope something I've said has helped you. My favorite suggestions for a girl are Shelby Maxine, Trinity MaShel, NeShel Alexanne, Madelyn MaShel, Mirabela Heline, and Lilliana Xeline. For a boy, I like Maximus Shelby, Shelby Maxwell, Maxel Hunter, Maxelin Gaige, Kai Maxby, and Axel Shea.

I think that it is really nice to name your child after it's grandmother. The only Maxine I know is an old lady, I do like Shelby. And you can always have a boy named Max or have that be his middle name.

How about Shelby Maxine, or just changing both names?
Marissa Sharon
Marina Sophie
Marie Sandra
Marielle Sharona
you get where this is going.
For a boy, Shelby can be used. Also, choose a name like Martin, Milton, Maxwell, etc. I like Maxwell Shelby!!
Sorry for your loss, but good luck and tell me what you decide to go along with.

Well if I have a daughter her first name is going to be Shelby. I would suggest naming her Shelby Maxine. That was she still has your grandmothers name. My daughter will be named Shelby Lucille. Lucille after my grandma. Also I know there are some boys who have been named Shelby. Its supposedly a unisex name.

I really like that name. You could give her a different first name and make her middle name Maxine or Shelby. I really like Max for a boy.
