If you use tap water, let it sit overnight uncovered so the chlorine can evaporate. Plants do not do well in the longrun if they are watered with water containing chlorine. You could also have three friends help you with the project. One could play rock and roll or rap music to his plant, one could play opera, one sweet slow music to dance too. The one with sweet slow music to dance too will grow and flourish, the one hearing rap will die, the one with opera, will live but not be as large as the one hearing sweet slow music. then you could have two other plants, one you touched, one you did not touch. Surprise your teacher, do more than you were asked to do for project. You might be surprised yourself, with your grade.

I did not know this until recently, but plants use a small amount a chlorine in their cells. So in giving typical house plants tap water you give them a needed nutrient.

As for which is best? My retail sale tropical house plants get tap water. My specialty sensitive plants (delicate ferns, epiphytes, terrarium plants) get distilled bottled water (most of the time, sometimes I'm lazy).

Anyway, good drainage is the key for potted plants. Salts and other toxins build up in pots where there is no drainage. The water that runs out of the bottom of the pots should be almost clear. If the water is dark brown, flush with water until all toxins are gone. Hope this helps.

tap water is OK but rain water is best if you can get it. If you use tap water remember to add a fertilizer once a month.

bottled water is usually no different than tap water, sometimes it is boiled, and flavor is added. You plant will appreciate the natural tap water.
