I guess it depends what you mean by freestanding... from the base to the top... there might be underwater mountains bigger... and Mons Olypus on Mars is the largest 'freestanding mountin' int he solar system that is known
I thought it was K2 I think most of the highest mountains are in or near the Himalayas
and yet the highest mountains have evidence they were covered by water... ".. the waters covered ALL the high mountains under ALL the heavens..." Genesis
the plates that the continents float on, were a little like the billiard balls when hit by the Q ball during the even that caused the flood of Noah with massive catastrophic changes... the continents even initially sinking a year with the runaway subduction causing the continents to be flatter than usual and massive vulcanism... one plate which represents current India rammed the rest of Asia causing the mountainous areas north of India
and the high mountains as you now have

Freestanding? Hahahahaha, I hate it when those mountains get so old they need help standing up. You get my vote for stupidest question I've seen so far - of course, I've only been on here for 5 minutes.

aren't all mountains freestanding? Or are you telling me that they are supported by a secret framework of props and ties and bungee straps and cannot stand up on their own.
My geography teacher never told me that!
