There's the Darryl Hannah shctick, where a mermaid leaves the sea, dries out completely, and becomes a fully functioning human female.
In this state she can do the business with a human male, then get back in the water, and her essential fishiness is restored from the waist down.
No problem.
Or are we calling Walt Disney a liar?

Mermaids are dated back to Atlantean (Atlantis, for those of you who dont know). Mermaids are what are called shapeshifters. They change from human to mer-people, and back again, at will. When Atlantis was flooded, many of the Atlanteans shapeshifted into humans, and pro-created on other lands, evovling so that shapeshifting was no longer allowed. Many believe that some of the mermaids that escaped the flooding of Atlantis shapeshifted into Dolphins, and decided to stay in that form. Maybe that's why dolphins have so many healing abilities?

Right I know this.
They swim from the sea back up the rivers jumping up special bridges and rocks up stream, and get really knackered. When they reach the spawning grounds they waggle their tails about and then spawn their little eggs into the stream bed and then a Merman comes along and puts jelly stuff over the top. And then they all die. um or that could be salmon.

Since they do NOT need air to breath, I would say they wouldn't give birth like dolphins.
I would say that like the salmon, they would release eggs in a river bed and the mermen would dispense their sperm in a white cloud over them; like salmon. However, I've never seen a storybook with a pregnant mermaid...so this idea of mine would work with the mythology.

There are several possibilities:
They are like fish where the female lays the egg/eggs and the male fertilizes them. They are like whales and dolphins. Or, if they are able to transform tail into legs, they come on land to mate.
Personally, I think they probably are more like whales and dolphins.

A mermaid is indeed a beautiful girl like you are. I can only say that maybe you should try it for yourself and you will have the answer right there. Good luck. Smile

I've think I've read somewhere that the same scientists that have successfully created green fluorescent pigs have successfully bred women with fish to create the first mermaids. My understanding has it that these women lay eggs to reproduce. I wonder whether they find any part of the experience pleasurable?

Same as any sea living mammal. Eggs and sperm. She releases the eggs he releases the sperm. The eggs float away and grow into young mermaids. Mermaids are real and you can eat them. Best grilled with a little squirt of lemon.
