1) I was reading an article on Hamsters late lastnight, and it said when you first bring it home to it's new cage it's best to completely leave them alone for a couple of days while they get settled in.

2) Hamsters are nocturnal

3) after a few days, try luring him out some sort of food, like a carrot stick or something.

4) If his cage is a boring thing with plastic bottom / wire top /hidey hole / water bottle / wheel / food dish, etc...... try treating him to something a bit more fancy, like with tunnels and things......... I saw some pretty funky ones on eBay lastnight, too...... http://home-garden.listings.ebay.co.uk/Pet-Supplies_Hamsters_W0QQfromZR4QQsacatZ1286QQsocmdZListingItemList

Hamsters are nocturnal, which it sounds like you know. However... that doesn't mean they'll wake up at night... it means they wake up when it's DARK. If the room is light, chances are the hamster will stay in it's box.

We leave the light off in my daughters room when she's not in there so that the hamster can be awake in the evening. That way he tends to sleep more overnight, instead of making all sorts of noise in his cage.

After you let him settle in for a few days, a good way of taking him out of the cage is to get a solid plastic cup, put it in the cage on it's side. Hamster will get curious and step inside. Gently tilt the cup up and take him out, and give him a little treat.

Then sit down on your bed and til the cup back so he can crawl out onto your lap.

This is how I trained my hamster, to take him out every day.

He is nocturnal and it's natural for him to play at night and sleep during the day. Also, they are a burrowing animal. Try adding tunnels for him to explore and put a feeding attachment at the end of the tunnel. Put the food out only during daylight hours and take it away at night. He may alter his sleeping pattern to adjust to the feeding schedule.

Hes probably just scared to come out because he is in a new place. This may sound mean but check if he is still alive he probably is but just check and make sure and if he is just reach in and grab him and wake him up by talking to him..

hamsters need 24-48 hrs to get used to their surroundings, then at night, they play all night while we sleep. they only stir around a little during the day. it takes awhile for them to get used toyou, get a plastic exercise ball for him to run in. let him out in the bed to run on for exercise, and try petting and holding him.

They are nocturnal. They play at night. He needs time to adjust and settle in.
