I just read on people.aol.com that the show has been cancelled. Now, I've NEVER watched the OC, nor was I ever inclined to, but I thought that it was a really popular show. Does anyone have any insight as to why it was cancelled?

It wasn't that popular of a show ratings wise in the U.S., but Internationally it was up there with CSI. It was also up there with CSI (what was the biggest show after American Idol in the U.S.) in season DVD and music CD sales. When they killed off a key character last season, the ratings fell to half that this season in the U.S. Another opponent of the O.C. was that Grey's Anatomy (now America's number one show after American idol) moved into the same slot in the U.S. Although Fox has the potential to have as many viewers as ABC, CBS and NBC, the ratings for The O.C. was that of The CW which doesn't have that potential because it has fewer stations in the U.S. airing that network.

Historically Fox has horrible ratings on Thursdays with 90210 being an exception.

The OC, the Fox show that chronicled life among a group of teenage friends in the Orange County locale, will end after its February 22 episode, the network said late today.

"This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close," show creator Josh Schwartz said in a statement. "Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew, and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out than creatively on top. It has been an amazing experience and a great run. For a certain audience, at a certain time, The OC has meant something. For that we are grateful."

Fox is set to air new episodes of the show every Thursday starting tomorrow, with the finale airing on February 22. The show debuted in August 2003 and quickly grabbed fans longing for the tryst-laden days of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place.

But it also grabbed new fans and used a healthy dose of big-name bands to do so. Heavyweights like U2 and Coldplay debuted singles on the show, while others like the Killers, Modest Mouse, and Death Cab for Cutie performed on the show.

The move was hardly unexpected given Fox's decision to order only 16 episodes of the show this season, down from orders of more than 25 shows in its first three years.

It wasn't as popular this year, I guess not as many people were watching it. To bad though, cause I love that show.

...and they killed off Misha Barton(sp?) character. She couldn't act! She is now taking acting classes, meanwhile she is modeling for designers.

I DID like the show, but it went down hill.

It's not what it use to be...sort of running out of storylines.
