Oh yeah,
Why would Americans actually want their civil rights/liberties? And why would we want someone that would actually stand up for civil liberties afforded by the Constitution of the United States?
As for them even defending "perverts," even "perverts" are afforded a defense. Ethical cannons require the "zealous" representation of your client.
Who will you run to when you're wrongly accused of a crime? Or don't you think that happens in the United States of America?

Yes and No.
On certain things I think they are doing a good job i.e. privacy/techology http://www.aclu.org/privacy/
On pretty much all other issues I think they have gone so far extreme that they are over the edge. i.e. I wrote a letter to the local office concerning asking for assistance or at least an attorney reference regarding a Constitutionally protected natural rights violations and misconduct by police. Their response was basically "sorry to hear, good luck with that, let us know how it goes." Not even a recommendation on an attorney. Now I'm sure if I had stated I'm a minority (I am a heinz 57 caucasian with some percentage Native American blood) and the cops were racist with me, they would have been bending over backwards to do everything they could. Go figure!
I don't see that the behavior of the officers involved was any better or worse than if their actions were racial.

Yes in some instances and No in others. I think the ACLU has lost sight of what "equality" truly is. Same with the NAACP.

Some actions made by them have had negative affects on America because they get a bit cocky about their work choosing cases that are absurd to defend yet they have the power to do so. I just try and remember the group was started to procect our rights and everybody has the right to have their rights protected even if you don't think so lol.

No... they help all sorts of people.
You just don't hear about it on Fox news.
Here's a site with examples of the ACLU helping Christians. http://adamkemp.newsvine.com/_news/2006/01/27/73246-the-aclu-is-not-evil

Yes and no.
They do good and bad. Sadly in the past few years its went more towards protecting the bad than the good. Just like our Governmnet, they dont know when to stop pushing the limits. Only they are pushing from the opposite direction.

ACLU is absolutely good for America. Our liberties with respect to expression and freedom to worship as we choose, and to have rights of due process is an integral part of American culture.
They may go overboard at times, but the fact that they stand in perpetual guardianship of our rights reassures me tremendously.
I suspect you have been sold a bill-of-goods by people who wish to curb the rights of individuals - because there is a lot of that being attempted, in the form of secret imprisonment, secret torture, unsupervised spying and searches, nowadays.
Also note that the same administration removing YOUR rights is currently claiming more and more exclusion and privilege from oversight for itself.

Hmmm....let's think about it for a second....
Civil Liberty = Bad for America?
Definitely not
Watchdog group ensuring civil liberties are upheld, especially when certain parties are historically terrible at policing themselves = Bad for America?
Certainly not
ACLU = Watchdog group that goes overboard occassionally?
Absolutely
Still, without civil rights groups we would be at the mercy of those corporations, individuals, and government entities (those with very well-paid lawyers in their corner) in regards to civil and social equality matters.
Can't live without 'em, sometimes can't live with 'em.
