Multiple purposes. Some offer more personalized education with 1-on-1 tutoring. Others offer faith-based education. Some offer specialized education that emphasize the child's special gifts or talents (science or math, for example). Then there are ones for generally talented and gifted students who excel in all of their studies. On the other end of the spectrum are the ones for children with behavioral disorders or learning disabilities. I'm sure there are many more specialized schools than the ones I've listed, but that's all I could think of.

The intention of the private school system is to provide children with smaller classrooms and more rigorous school lessons for a price. They generally exceed the quality of the public school system because they have admissions requirements/tests that allow the school to be more restrictive with the students they choose. Some private schools, such as Catholic private schools, allow the benefits of a private education with the preferred concentration in religion. So I guess it depends on what, specifically, you are aiming your question at.

Many people would argue that many private schools provide a better quality education at a lower cost per student. Of course sending my children to private school forces me to pay for public school with my tax money, and then again paying the private school.

Better education. Private schools cost a lot of money per year but you get better 1 on 1 tuition with the children and usually things are on offer to private school kids which aren't available to state school kids (such as certain trips abroad etc)
