GREAT QUESTION - one that I was going to ask. I would add that some people are motivated to ask questions by framing a debate or promoting an idea or agenda. Personally, I like to help people, something to do at lunch, and, on occasion, get on a soap box. You get what you pay for!

When I discovered one of my online essays was getting hits from a link in an answer here, and that someone was questioning its reliability, I joined and responded with the sources of the material cited. I ended up getting Best Answer for that.

What I know about the dumbing down of society motivates me to provide accurate information to those who need answers...because public schools (and parents in many cases) certainly won't.

When I first started participating, I was just bored. But then I really enjoyed it because I like helping and I also just like talking lol So what keeps me here is the interaction with people who allow me to rant and rave :o)

all of the above- Mainly boredom at first and then I really wanted to help people (I stayed in food and drink for that) and know I'm curious about all these wackos in S&C and I'm really addicted to seeing what they come up with next. Oh and BTW I'm becoming one of those wackos- it's contagious.

What ever you've suggested seems ideal. however we provide solutions and share knowledge free of value. yet Yahoo and Google are earning thousands of thousands from it. apparently they don't value something from the guy who benefited from the guidelines we presented. yet this will strengthen acceptance of those web pages and the gang earns in thousands of thousands indirectly. also right here better than 50% suggestions are ineffective. For knowledge sharing WIKIPEDIA is a much better position.
