The only saying my grandad had was " I'm going to see a man about a dog". what he really meant was he was away to blow all the house keeping money in the pub.

Not so much in times of trouble or joy, but when I was a little kid my girlfriend's mother had a card taped up in her kitchen. It said, "Small minds talk about people. Average minds talk about things. Great minds talk about ideas." I was in elementary school, but that saying had impact on me. It was enough to make me decide to never idly talk about people too.

Well your grandfather borrowed that line from FDR when addressing America at the outbreak of WWII. I believe it is one of the all time great quotes.
As for me, I like, 'always remember to keep your eye on the donut and not the hole.'

That generation had a better way of saying reassuring things that actually made alot of sense.

My Nan used to tell me "It's far from your backside you aint got to sit on it" When I had hurt myself.
Whenever my Grandad messed up the decorating, he used to say "Never mind we will put a clock on it!"
