A press release is more geared toward answering a question (and putting a spin on it). So for example if a company fired their CEO, they would issue a "press release".

A news release is more of a general announcement. That would be issued by a media company announcing "Company X fired their CEO" (and then Company X would issue a "press release" explaining why to calm their stockholders).

They're synonymous. Nowadays, "news release" is overtaking "press release" in the vernacular because of the advent of television, radio, and Web news media outlets.
