It just seems like there has been an explosion in this lately especially amongst young blacks and hispanics. Is it just a fad or a dislike of original names or are they trying to hide something? Same thing with entertainers - their names are getting ridiculous.

The reference to entertainers is really only a small part of the question I understand the marketing of the product (the singer) but more the individual out there.

because on the "street" you get nicknames like that. However, no one told these kids that giving yourself a nickname is one of the lamest things you could do (that means you T.I.P), and that the "streets" are something you can be proud to have come from. meaning that you struggled, worked hard AND LEFT! You have to be somewhere else to declare that you were FROM somewhere.

but anyway. I'm hoping it's fad out in a few years.

I'm guessing you aren't in show business. Its a marketing thing - who would you think would garner more attention - John Cougar or John Mellencamp? They are the same person, but John Cougar has more of a "zing" to it. Show business names are designed to be memorable, distinctive, and to attract attention. A lot of white guys do the same thing. Tony Curtis's real name is Bernie Schwartz.

Yeah, that's true.
Black people have lost a sense of their culture, and we cling on to trivial things like this now.
